First EU country to ban disposable vape sales

Belgium will become the first European Union country to ban sales of disposable vapes from January 2025, reports Reuters.

It is already illegal to sell vapes to anyone under the age of 18 in Belgium and the ban comes as part of an anti-tobacco drive, as government data has shown that most young smokers start the habit with e-cigarettes rather than regular tobacco cigarettes, reports Reuters.

“Disposable e-cigarettes are designed to attract young people, to appeal to new users who maybe never smoked,” said Belgian health minister Frank Vandenbroucke. “E-cigarettes are partly attracting a new generation of smokers.”
In 2022, a World Health Organization survey of 20,000 Belgian 11 to 18 year olds showed that 12 per cent said they had used a vape in the last 30 days – more than double the amount in 2018, according to Reuters.

Other EU countries such as Germany and France are also working on laws to ban single-use vapes.
