United States: Philip Morris to expand Zyn production

Philip Morris International has announced that it will invest USD 600 million to open a new manufacturing facility in Colorado to produce its Zyn nicotine pouches, reports Reuters.

The new plant will generate 500 jobs and is expected to begin operating in 2025. Philip Morris said it would invest the USD 600 million over the next two years through one of its US affiliates, according to Reuters.

Philip Morris bought Zyn producer Swedish Match in 2022 in a bid to enter the US market with alternatives to traditional tobacco products. The demand for Zyn has been high with shipments going up by almost 80 per cent in the first quarter compared to the year before, reports Reuters.

However, in June, Philip Morris was forced to stop nationwide sales on the Zyn website after a subpoena from the District of Columbia, which requested information about its compliance with the state’s 2022 ban on the sale of all flavoured tobacco, reports Reuters.

In a further bid to strengthen its position in the alternative smoking market, Philip Morris is looking to launch its heated tobacco device IQOS in the US, however anti-tobacco and health groups have already written to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration expressing opposition to the move.
