Data from the Regulatory Activities Surveillance Authority (SZTFH) shows that heated tobacco sales have skyrocketed, breaking records month by month with the gap to traditional cigarettes steadily closing according to Hungary today.

While 38.3 million heated tobacco units were sold per month in January 2020, by August 2024, 2,245 million units had been sold and projections show that this number could reach between 3,300 and 3,400 million by the end of the year.



On the other hand, traditional cigarette sales are further declining. In 2024, monthly sales are around 150-200 million less than in 2020, this equates to around 7.5 million packs sold each month. According to Hungary today, annual sales have dropped from 7,644 million in 2020 to an expected further reduction from 5,715 million in 2023. Sales of fine-cut tobacco products for rolling or filling cigarettes have also declined by 20-25 per cent compared to 2020.
