A pack of 20 cigarettes will cost EUR 1 more from 9 October after an increase in excise duty with Minister for Finance Jack Chambers saying the rise would “support public health policy to reduce smoking levels in Irish society”. This would mean most popular brands would reach a price point of EUR 18.05 per pack.
Furthermore, a new vaping tax will come into effect next year in an effort to deter young people from using vapes. The increase will see a vape cost around EUR 9.23 compared to the current price of EUR 8.
“Due to the operational and administrative challenges associated with this measure it will not commence until the middle of next year and therefore will be subject to a commencement order,” Chambers said of the new tax, which is expected to raise EUR 7 million next year and EUR 17 million in a full year, reports The Irish Times.
The Irish Heart Foundation has welcomed the new e-cigarette tax and increase in the cost of cigarettes. Chris Macey, the charity’s director of advocacy, said it is “a vital deterrent for young people to take up vaping and smoking and these measures will have a significant long-term health benefit”.
Meanwhile, the Government is also looking into a ban on the sale of disposable vapes due to their harmful effect on both health and the environment.
